I remember the day my mom was recommending me romantic movies that she used to watch and love in her youth, it was a lazy afternoon from my teenage years when I used to have all the time in the world for movies and nice things like that. That day was the day I’ve ever heard of Top Gun, a movie with a sexy pilot and a love story that was watched by so many people from the ’80s and instantly became a classic.
Needless to say, I liked Top Gun a lot and, like everybody else, fell in love with Tom Cruise. I was somewhat proud that I’ve discovered a great movie that not many people of my age knew about, and that it gave me a fun subject to discuss about with my mom when she was back from work.
Top Gun is more than just a sexy pilot and a love story, it’s a really great action movie with lots of stunts that Tom Cruise was crazy enough to take on. Now, 36 (34) years later, the technology gave Cruise even more options to create magic on screen. To be more precise, the Top Gun sequel was filmed in 2019 and supposed to be released in 2020. Two pandemic years later, here it finally is, the Top Gun: Maverick movie in all its glory! Tom Cruise pushed the studious to postpone the release of the movie as everybody was ready to digitally release it. The best thing he has done, apart from bringing Maverick back to life more than 30 years later, was to push for this cinematic release. It was such an amazing experience to watch the movie on the big screen and I really cannot recommend it enough. If you loved the first one, you will LOVE Top Gun: Maverick.
The Navy needs Maverick. The kid needs Maverick. That’s why I fought for you. That’s why you’re still here.
The movie picks up years later, after the events of the 1986’s movie, with a Maverick as passionate as ever, and a young team of pilots ready to learn from the best. From Monica Barbaro (who I’ve known since Chicago Justice – cancelled after one season), playing the young female pilot which helps to bring the movie to the present through diversity, to Jennifer Connelly, the most beautiful presence from the picture, and Miles Teller, who just shines as bright as ever, creating a new character within the Top Gun universe that just brings everything together and somehow makes you forget that it’s been more than 30 years.
The soundtrack is also fantastic, with names as One Republic and Lady Gaga on the final cut, and the re-recording of the classical Top Gun anthem (I mean, just listen to this), the soundtrack plays an important part in the storytelling, but most of all it helps to deliver a lot of emotion captured in the 2 hours and 10 minutes of the runtime.
It’s funny, it’s emotional, it has everything and something more! Give yourself a nice break with this movie and feel the nostalgia of the passing of time, but more than anything the nostalgia of better times – I have goosebumps just writing this review! – for me the 80’s and 90′ will forever be the better times. Less technology, less disruptions, less opinions, less rush, less, but somehow more. Just like this movie.
